School Counseling Program

Mission

Boerne ISD counselors advocate for and support all students in their personal, social, academic and career development. This is accomplished through a variety of approaches including, but not limited to, delivery of guidance curriculum in various group sizes to support student development; individual and group counseling; individual student planning and goal setting activities; consultation and coordination activities to support student success, and effective interpretation of student assessment data.

The Texas Education Code (§33.005) specifies that "a school counselor shall work with the school faculty and staff, students, parents, and the community to plan, implement, and evaluate a developmental guidance and counseling program." Furthermore, the school counselor shall design the school counseling program to include the following four components: guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support.

Role and Philosophy

The role of the school counselor in Boerne ISD is to advocate for and support all students in their personal, social, academic, and career development….ensuring that every student has equitable access to opportunities that promote growth and success across all developmental areas.

The mission of the BISD Counseling Team is to use a WHOLE CHILD, student-centered, solution-focused approach to counseling. We are committed to showing unconditional positive regard for every student, accepting students for who they are and always putting them first. We focus on guiding and equipping students to find their own solutions and develop the academic, social, and emotional skills needed to reach their post-secondary goals.

Career and Graduation Requirement

House Bill 5 (2013) redefined graduation and testing requirements to give students flexible paths toward college or careers, making it vital for families to review requirements and consult counselors for guidance.

Comprehensive Counseling Program

A comprehensive school counseling program is a data-driven, developmental framework designed to meet the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of all students.

It’s not just reactive counseling — it’s a systemic, proactive plan that aligns with state and national models such as the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs (2018) and the ASCA National Model (2021).

  1. Guidance Curriculum – Classroom lessons that teach essential skills like decision-making, communication, emotional regulation, and career exploration.

  1. Responsive Services – Immediate and direct interventions for students facing personal concerns, crises, or challenges.

  2. Individual Planning – Helping students set personal goals, explore careers, and make academic decisions.

  3. System Support – Program management, professional development, collaboration with stakeholders, and advocacy to ensure the counseling program runs effectively. (According to ASCA and Texas Model)
